Oromoni’s Death: Dowen College to remain shut while other schools resume – Lagos state government
The Lagos state government has said that Dowen College in Lekki, Lagos state will not be reopened on Tuesday, the 4th of January until the investigation into the death of a student of the school, Sylvester Oromoni, reaches an advanced stage.
This is as other private primary and secondary schools in Lagos prepare to resume for the commencement of the second term on Tuesday, January 4.
Recall that Oromoni died on November 30, 2021. His family alleged he was beaten by some of his seniors days before he died.
Following the public outrage generated by the incident, the Lagos state government on December 3, 2021, ordered the indefinite closure of the school.
In an interview with Premium Times, an assistant director in charge of the public affairs unit, Ministry of Education, Ganiu Lawal, said very soon, the school would join others to resume but “not until ongoing investigations into the unfortunate incident reach an advanced stage.”
According to Lawal, since the matter was not strictly a state matter and with the involvement of the police and other parties, “it would be ideal for all “t’s” to be crossed and “I’s” to be dotted.
“But I can assure you that very soon the issue will be resolved, but they are not resuming tomorrow” Lawal said
In a statement released on Monday, January 3, the state’s Commissioner for Education, Folasade Adefisayo, said bullying, cultism, and other vices would not be tolerated in any part of the school. Admonishing school administrators to increase counseling of students against these vices, the commissioner welcomed students, teachers, and school administrators to the starting of a New Year and second term of 2021/2022 school session.
“Devise appropriate strategies to advance teacher, student interaction in order to gain an insight and expose negative tendencies before they metamorphose into unfortunate situations. Adequate monitoring, especially as it affects boarding school students should be enforced to prevent the incidence of bullying and all other vices,” the commissioner advised
Sylvester Oromoni: Autopsy report exonerates housemasters and the students from murder – Police
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has said that the two autopsies carried out on 11-year-old Dowen college student, Sylvester Oromoni, did not show that he was murdered.
Vanguard reports that Odumosu in an interview said two autopsies were carried out on Oromoni’s body and both disregarded any allegation of killing. He was, however, quick to add that investigation was still ongoing, part of which was the toxicology test that needed to be conducted on the corpse.
” We are not at the peak yet. But we have done our investigation and have sent the report to the Directorate of Public Prosecution, DPP for legal advise on those arrested and DPP has replied. We have gone through the medical aspect which is the post mortem.
Post mortem was carried out in Delta and Lagos states. The first one done in Delta State was only witnessed by parents of the deceased.
But after I held a meeting with the parties concerned, at the instance and directive of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and my Inspector- General of Police, IGP Alkali Usman Baba, the second post mortem was carried out in Lagos.
The corpse was brought from Delta State to Lagos, where the Post mortem was carried out with all the parties involved , that is : parents of the deceased, parents of the students accused, the school authority and government. These were the four parties that witnessed the post mortem. And the result is out.
The report of the Post Mortem did not bring out the issue of murder on anybody.
Besides the result of the autopsy, the court order that we got has elapsed and we have released the house master and others on bail, because there was nothing that indicted them of murder.
It is only a murder case that is not bailable. Every other offences are bailable. They have been in custody for more than twenty days and that is infringing on their fundamental human rights. Since medical and legal reports have not indicted them so far, I think there is need to allow them have their freedom because bail is not the end of the case.
Another forensic test known as toxicology , will be carried out on the corpse.
By the way, the Toxicology test is to determine the concoction that was allegedly forced into the deceased mouth which peeled his lips.
Toxicology test was being done in Nigeria before, precisely at the Lagos State medical facility in Lagos Island. But after the EndASRS crisis, it is conducted outside the country.
Until that one is effectively done, we won’t know the final report. But with the interim report, nothing showed murder”Odumosu said
Recall that the deceased, who was a Junior Secondary School 2 student of Dowen College and a boarder, was rushed to his parent’s home in Warri, Delta State two months ago, owing to some injuries he sustained after he was allegedly attacked by some of his seniors. The school however dismissed the claim. According to them, he was injured during a football match. He died on November 30.
The police began an investigation into the incident. Five of the students whose names Sylvester allegedly mentioned before passing were arrested alongside three housemasters. They have however, been released on bail.
FG extends NIN/SIM verification till March 2022 as enrolment hits 71 million
The deadline for linkage of the Subscribers Identity Module (SIM) cards with the National Identity Numbers (NIN) has been extended till March 31, 2022, by the federal government.
Prof. Isa Ibrahim Pantami, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy conveyed the approval of the Federal Government in a joint statement by the Director of Public Affairs of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, and the Head of Corporate Communications of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Mr. Kayode Adegoke.
It was also stated that 71 million citizens have been captured in the national database as of December 30.
The statement read;
“As of 30th December 2021, the NIMC has issued over 71million NINs with over 14,000 enrolment centres set up across the country.
“Furthermore, the NIMC has also set up enrolment centres in over 31 countries to cater for Nigerians in the Diaspora.
“The unprecedented growth in the National Identity Database to over 71 million unique NINs in such a short period, with about three to four SIMs linked to a NIN, reflects the concerted effort of the Federal Government, the Nigerian populace and legal residents and this is truly commendable.
“Following the request by stakeholders, including citizens, legal residents and Nigerians in the diaspora, the Federal Government has extended the deadline of the exercise to the 31st of March, 2022.
“This extension would enable the Federal Government to consolidate the gains of the process and accelerate the enrolment of Nigerians in key areas like the remote areas, diaspora, schools, hospitals, worship centres, and the registration of legal residents.
“The Honourable Minister has, however, implored Nigerians and legal residents to enrol for their NINs and link with their SIMs during this period of extension as more services will be requiring the NIN for identification.
“He also reiterated the commitment of the Federal Government to support the NCC and the NIMC in ensuring that the objectives of the exercise are achieved.”
REVEALED: How Buhari Government Kept Sunday Igboho In Detention, Not Benin Republic
The lawyer to Yoruba activist, Sunday Adeyemi (Igboho), Yomi Alliyu, has disclosed that the Nigerian government under President Muhammadu Buhari is the one keeping Igboho in prison and not the Benin Republic government.
Though Igboho has been detained for months in the Benin Republic custody, the lawyer noted that the Nigerian government was behind his continued incarceration.
Alliyu also debunked reports of an alleged plan to eliminate the activist.
In an interview with Vanguard, the lawyer warned those “flying the kite” to desist from spreading such speculations assuring that Igboho would regain freedom soon.
He said, “I don’t have knowledge of a threat to his life. I speak with his wife regularly but I don’t have such knowledge of plans to eliminate him.
“We have persuaded his boys and Yoruba youths not to take laws into their hands. We told them not to behave like IPOB (the Indigenous People of Biafra) because we told them that if they start killing and burning, they will be killing their kins. We urged them to keep their cool, however, if anybody is flying such a kite to know the feelings of what will happen if Sunday Igboho is murdered in prison, I advise that such a person should have a rethink.
“I don’t think anyone is planning that except the enemies of this government. The only way this government can wash its hands off this evil intention, is to release Sunday Igboho now because they (FG) are the ones keeping him in prison and not the Benin Republic government.
“If anything should happen to Sunday Igboho, we will hold the Federal Government responsible.
“That is why we have been appealing to Yoruba youths not to take laws into their hands because we are optimistic that Sunday Igboho will be free and that the alleged plan to kill him is a mere rumour. I don’t see any threat to his life.”
During a podcast on Tuesday Olayomi Koiki, spokesman for Igboho, alleged that the Benin Republic President, Patrice Talon, was working with the Federal Government to extradite Igboho to Nigeria.
He said, “So many people have heard rumours in the past 24/48 hours. We know that God Almighty is watching.
“If they are trying, they cannot be successful. If they are planning evil against Prof. Banji Akintoye and others, they are only trying but God’s power is superior.
“The enemies are trying to eliminate him (Igboho). Their plan is to eliminate him so that the Yoruba Nation agenda will be silenced, but God has shown that he is above them.”
